SUCCESS STORY - Delegation
We identified that my goal of being a 'good' manager would only arise as a result of time invested with others (it seems obvious to me now, but over the years I have always made the 'excuse' of being too busy!). Key points which I now adopt include:
‑ Communicate and, importantly, listen more.
‑ Spend time briefing at the outset (rather than skipping detail).
‑ Spend time reviewing the results on completion (with the person concerned).
‑ Be receptive to other peoples ideas (learn from their experience).
‑ Develop trust in others to do a good job (recognise other peoples skills).
‑ Give others responsibility to complete a task.
‑ Be proactive in offering to help/spend time with others (offer support).
‑ Pass on my skills/experiences to others (so that they can learn grow).
My new‑found way of working has, however, mainly come around as a result of my realizing the importance of 'time' at a number of levels; not only in what I do but also how I spend time with others (30 minutes detailed briefing/reviewing can have a disproportionate benefit in terms of the hours it knocks off my working week).
